In no other time has the saying that “the children are the hope and future of the world” rung truer than in ours: the age of the climate emergency and environmental crises. While some of us older folks are scampering to be able to cut through the noise of disinformation, fake news and the politicking of our age, we also see that it is the young people who are leading the way to highlight climate science, true climate leadership, and real solutions toward a greener and better world.

The notion of superheroes has changed. The mild-mannered, unassuming investigative reporter is no longer a separate “secret” identity removed from the stalwart defender of truth, justice and humanity. We know they are one and the same. The grade schooler who shyly comes up to her peers to convince them to segregate waste, and who tells her parents to stop buying stuff packed in single-use plastics from the supermarket is no longer the outcast, but a true leader. The heroes of today also rely more on one another, on teamwork, on access to information, creativity and innovation, and having a collective voice and doing collective action, as their real “super power.” This book taps into that power and grows the potential of the next generations.

To anyone who cares about saving the world, it is crucial to understand the realities in people’s daily lives. In the face of the multiple crises we face, and the rise of the power of the youth in fighting for the planet, this book comes with perfect timing. Eddy’s story, crafted with such a heartfelt sincerity and hopeful alacrity of the characters, teaches us how we can truly be a hero among many heroes and take on the world’s biggest problems with daily acts of courage and kindness. What we have in front of us is very much a battle we need to really win, and Eddy Saves the World is the boost of inspiration we need.

It is an exciting honor to hold this book up and tell everyone, ‘hey you’ve got to read this!’, to what I hope will be legions of readers and followers. Not all heroes wear capes, after all, and if you want to be one, then Eddy’s story is a fantastic place to start.

In Eddy Saves The World, Laura shows us that, to find heroes, we don’t need to look upwards, but inwards and to each other.
